Áo Dài or Wedding Gown? How Vietnamese-Canadian Brides Are Choosing Both

One of the most common questions we hear at V Studio is: "Do I have to choose between an Áo Dài and a Western wedding gown?"
The answer, for most Vietnamese-Canadian couples, is no — and the two-outfit wedding has become one of the most popular trends we see in the GTA.
The Traditional First Look
The Áo Dài is typically worn during the Lễ Ăn Hỏi (engagement ceremony) and the formal family greeting at the start of the wedding day. Red and gold remain the most traditional colours, symbolizing luck and prosperity, though many modern brides are choosing blush, champagne, or deep burgundy for a contemporary twist.
The groom typically wears a matching Áo Dài or a fitted suit in complementary colours. At V Studio, we carry full sets for the couple and can coordinate outfits for parents and the wedding party as well.
The Reception Change
After the ceremony, many brides change into a Western wedding gown for the reception. This is where you have the most creative freedom — ballgowns, sleek minimalist styles, and off-shoulder silhouettes are all popular choices. The switch usually happens during cocktail hour and takes about 20–30 minutes with a bridesmaid's help.
What to Consider When Planning Two Outfits
Timeline: Build at least 30 minutes into your reception schedule for the outfit change. Let your planner know in advance.
Photography: Tell your photographer you'll have two looks — they'll plan lighting and shot lists accordingly.
Budget: Renting one outfit and purchasing the other is a practical approach many of our clients use. We offer both options at our North York studio.
Comfort: Your Áo Dài will be worn during the most emotionally intense part of the day (family ceremonies, photos). Make sure it fits perfectly and you can move freely.
